Al Gore has suggested that anxiety of facing pressure from Donald Trump may have driven the Microsoft founder to row back on his climate crisis position.
Describing Trump as “the most dishonest leader the U.S. has seen”, Gore warned that the president’s promotion of fossil fuels and retreat from renewable energy is “significantly hurting” the American economic system.
Environmental Harm and Economic Impact
In an discussion at the Cop30 United Nations climate summit, Gore stated, “The president’s already doing a lot of damage to the environment. Maybe the largest impact he’s doing is to the U.S. itself.”
He pointed out that the Asian nation is now exporting eco-friendly innovations with a cumulative export value that outstrips all fossil fuel exports from the United States, a pattern that is speeding up significantly.
Bill Gates’ Controversial Shift
The tech billionaire, previously a leading voice in environmental efforts, recently argued for pushing the environmental emergency down the international agenda, in favor of health issues.
Gore voiced bewilderment at this shift, saying, “The idea of slowing down on climate again surprised every climate scientist that I know and respect.”
“Yeah, the president approves. That may be what Gates was shooting for.”
Gore observed that after Trump’s re-election, Gates let go of the majority of his environmental team, went to the White House, and lavished praise on Trump.
Concern Over Backlash
Gore suggested that Gates, like many wealthy executives, may be worried of facing retaliation by Trump. “It may be that he is genuinely concerned that Trump will bully him,” Gore remarked.
Trump reacted to Gates’ change of heart with supportive social media posts.
Gore continued, “The only rave review of what he put out last week was from Donald Trump. Yes, he approves. That may be what he intended.”
Challenging a Misleading Dichotomy
Gore emphasized that framing the environmental challenge and worldwide health issues as opposing choices is wrong.
“The idea that there is a binary choice between health and climate has been widely dismissed by virtually every scientist in this field,” he explained.
“It’s completely irrational that governments are forcing citizens to fund the damage of part of humanity’s future.”
Gore pointed out that the prestigious medical journal released a study on the same day as Gates’ announcement, detailing the enormous health consequences of inaction on climate.
Advocating for Smarter Investments
Rather than taking money away from climate action, Gore argued that Gates should push for redirecting the hundreds of billions spent on oil and gas support toward health and climate solutions.
“Accelerating solutions to the environmental emergency is one of the single most effective ways to enhance wellness in the world,” he stated.
Defending the UN Climate Process
Gore robustly defended the annual Cop meetings, noting that they achieve significant results than they are recognized for.
“These global meetings serves as a nucleus for businesses and organizations that gather annually,” he remarked. “Numerous groups come up with their own deals that advance progress.”
“These international meetings is one of the principal reasons that the green transition has accelerated significantly.”
He continued that industries and governments are pushing ahead with new technology and implementing renewable energy and other eco-friendly projects.
Positive Progress and Generational Change
Gore highlighted what he sees as a “shift in attitudes” in the U.S., with many people embracing environmental efforts even as the federal government dismantles them.
He warned that Trump might face a “more independent” Congress following recent voting losses for GOP contenders.
“There’s a completely false view circulating that somehow we are falling behind.”
Gore commended Zohran Mamdani for his effective campaign for NYC leadership, noting that while he disagreed with some of his ideas, his campaign abilities were remarkably evident.
Highlighting Climate Impacts
At the summit, Gore showed attendees with a slide show of horrors caused by the climate crisis.
Standing before a large display showing images of recent catastrophes worsened by climate change, Gore stated, “It is literally insane that we are letting this persist.”
He raised his voice while displaying visuals of record drought in the Amazon, melting polar ice, and devastating weather in Southeast Asia, Jamaica, South America, the Philippines, and the U.S..
“How long are we going to stand by and keep increasing temperatures so that these sort of events get more severe?” he asked.
Preparing for Climate Impacts
Gore emphasized the need to prepare and prevent, but warned that if we allow this insanity—treating the atmosphere as a dump—some things will be very difficult to adapt to.
Promoting Climate Trace
His primary effort at the conference has been to advocate for the emissions mapping initiative, which tracks global warming pollutants and air pollutants causing wellness issues worldwide.
“We are very excited about these new tools,” Gore said. “We have got the tools and the deployment models. Some people think we lack the political will, but as I like to remind people, political will is a renewable resource.”
