Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
