The veteran bowler admitted that he still lacks an effective strategy to get out the Australian star and warns that the Ashes could become a drawn-out contest if England fails to remove Smith early in his innings.
The Batsman's Impressive Statistics
Steve Smith, regarded as one of the finest batters of this generation, holds a remarkable average of 56.01 in the Ashes series with 12 hundred-run innings to his name.
Smith, having played in all Ashes contests since 2010-11, was the top scorer during both the 2017-18 and 2019 contests, registering 774 and 687 runs respectively while the English bowler was part of England's squad.
Broad's Frustration
"I recall when he compiled that substantial innings in Perth during 2017 and every delivery seemed to hit the perfect contact for three consecutive days," the bowler revealed on a cricket podcast.
"Each ball I attempted simply found perfectly with his bat."
"He maintains that particular mindset of the wicket works for me, and I'm determined not to get out."
Impressive Numbers
Broad got the better of the batsman on 11 occasions in Test matches - three more than other bowlers - yet admits he hasn't identified a reliable method.
His overall batting average of 56.02 increases to 59.70 when playing at home. Solely the great Ricky Ponting with 41 centuries has scored more than his 36 test centuries for the national side.
Bowling Difficulties
Broad stated: "Naturally his technique has evolved over time, but I remain unable to clearly identify this approach works to dismiss him."
"That represents a remarkable quality of his. He's tremendously tough to face. At times you feel that you haven't bowled a bad delivery and it nevertheless travels for a boundary."
Current Performance and Readiness
The batsman's form experienced a slight decline between mid-2023 to late 2024 when he experienced 23 batting opportunities without a Test century, but he bounced back with two centuries against the Indian team recently and added 131 and 141 runs against Sri Lanka at the start of this year.
After a two-month break, he started his training for the England-Australia contest in the end of October and quickly registered 118 in his first appearance.
Winning Approach
"To win the series, we need to restrict his scoring to below fifty, correct?" Broad pondered.
"He's going to make a ton, it's his trademark."
"If he averages forty, that represents at least 15 below his career average, so your strategy is working. In my opinion it's crucial to dismiss him before he settles."
"Unless England aren't celebrating his dismissal within the initial 40 runs, it promises to be a long series."
Changing Strategies
The English team has attempted various plans to address Smith's unusual style during 14 Ashes series contests.
The bowler mentioned perfecting an outward-moving delivery aimed at Smith before the previous encounter, while the team has focused on the area around his legs, pitched away from off stump and experimented with the close-in leg-side field during the 2019 series - a series that Smith commenced with back-to-back hundreds at the Birmingham ground.
Memorable Moments
"I remember when the English fielder was positioned at leg gully, and he kept diving left and right for the opening overs, just missing him on several occasions," Broad recalled.
"The batsman survived, scored two centuries in that match, extraordinary batting."
Broad added: "I remember attending a bowlers' meeting about Steve Smith in 2017-18 and they suggested maybe we can test attacking his stumps early'}."
"'Oh really, could we examine the number of occasions he's been bowled in Australian conditions during the previous five seasons?' A single instance."
Archer's Potential Impact
The upcoming series, which starts in Friday in Perth (specific timing), will probably involve Smith facing the English fast bowler for the first test matchup since the previous encounter, when he was notably unsettled and hit by a short ball during the England paceman's fierce spell at that famous venue.
The batsman has always pointed out that the bowler didn't get him in that particular Test - he had to retire hurt and was dismissed lbw to Chris Woakes upon resuming his innings - though Arcer did manage to dismiss him on a horizontal bat in a limited-overs match during the previous season.
"Is Archer capable be that solution?" Broad wondered. "Making him nick from back of a length, going after the ball."
"Since Archer has that trajectory of curving into the stumps, is he able to bowl a ball leaving the bat? Smith looks for the delivery coming in."
